Nurturing Young Minds Through School Gardening: Vegetable Growing at DJ Grin Nursery and Primary School
At DJ Grin Nursery and Primary School in Rugashari Town Council, Kagadi District, learning goes beyond the classroom. One of the school’s most impactful and inspiring initiatives is its vibrant vegetable growing garden, where learners actively engage in hands-on agricultural practices that are transforming both their education and livelihoods.
The school garden serves as a living classroom, giving pupils the opportunity to grow vegetables such as tomatoes, cabbages, sukuma wiki (collard greens), and onions. Under the guidance of their teachers, learners participate in every stage of the gardening process—from preparing the land and planting seeds to watering, weeding, and harvesting.

This initiative not only equips learners with practical agricultural skills and a strong work ethic, but also has real-life economic and health benefits. The vegetables harvested are used to supplement the school feeding program, helping to improve learners’ nutrition and boost their immunity. In addition, part of the produce is sold, enabling learners to generate small income, an experience that introduces them to basic entrepreneurship and financial responsibility at an early age.
The impact of the project extends beyond the school. With support and encouragement from their parents, many learners are starting small kitchen gardens at home. These gardens are helping families improve their household nutrition while also providing an opportunity to earn additional income. In some cases, the income generated supports learners in accessing scholastic materials, strengthening both their education and well-being.
DJ Grin Nursery and Primary School’s approach reflects a holistic vision of education—one that integrates academics, life skills, health, and community empowerment. By nurturing learners to grow their own food and understand its value, the school is cultivating a generation that is self-reliant, health-conscious, and economically aware.
To further strengthen and expand this impactful initiative, the school welcomes support from well-wishers and partners in areas such as farming tools, improved seeds, irrigation facilities, and training support.
Together, we can empower young learners to grow, thrive, and build a healthier and more sustainable future.
